Location of the two experimental sites on the Mont-Ventoux, France. Site 1 (red points) located along an altitudinal gradient using five plots of 20 m × 20 m from 995 m to 1,340 m elevation (referred to as Dvx1, Dvx2, Dvx3, Dvx4, and Dvx5, respectively). Site 2 (blue points) contained 16 experimental plots (from TC1 to TC16; 20 m × 20 m), spaced about 40 m apart and located along a contour line transect of 638 m (altitude 1,130 m), from a crest to an anticlinal valley and which did not intersect site 1
