Evolutionary novelty and conservation investigated using Physcomitrella patens. The main lineages of land plants are depicted in an evolutionary tree. Bryophytes are a paraphyletic group, depicted as three separate lineages in the figure, encompassing the liverworts, mosses, and hornworts. Physcomitrella patens is a model moss. On the one hand, several studies investigate moss-specific traits (red box) often related to the resilience of moss to environmental conditions. On the other hand, early adaptations of land plants and functional evolution of gene families can be analyzed by comparative studies between mosses and vascular plants (green boxes)
