Table 2 The set of metrics computed at each forested point

From: The utility of fused airborne laser scanning and multispectral data for improved wind damage risk assessment over a managed forest landscape in Finland

Variable

Description

From GIS considerations of microstand height data:

distToEdgeN, distToEdgeNE, ...

Distance of the target tree from the indicated upwind stand edge.

(eight of them)

For example, \({d{}i{}st{}T{}o{}E{}d{}g{}e_{N}}\) is the distance to the associated edge when the wind direction is from the north.

gapizeN, gapizeNE, ...

This is the size of the gap (in metres) in the indicated upwind direction. For example, gapizeN is the size of the associated gap when the wind direction is from the north.

From the regression-based critical wind speed model:

cwsN, cwsNE, cwsE, ...

Critical wind speed (for various wind directions). For example, cwsN denotes the critical wind speed calculated at the point, assuming that the wind is blowing from the north.

After modification with wind multipliers:

tmwsN, tmwsNE, tmwsE, ...

Threshold meteorological wind speed.
